Malaysia Hong Kong International Comics Week

The first ever Malaysia Hong Kong International Comic Week 2024 brings Malaysia and Hong Kong comic creators closer to their fans at the Curve, Mutiara Damansara

THE Malaysian and Hong Kong comic industries are collaborating once again for the first ever Malaysia-Hong Kong International Comic Week 2024 from May 1-12, 2024, at the Curve Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. This exciting event marks a new chapter in collaboration between the vibrant comic industries of Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Following the success of the Hong Kong Pavilion at Comic Fiesta 2023 last December, the main highlight of the Malaysia-Hong Kong International Comics Week is an exhibition featuring prints of original paintings by 10 outstanding comic artists from Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The Malaysia-Hong Kong International Comic Week 2024 is proudly co-organized by Majikku IP, Comiccker Union, and the Curve. This exciting collaboration promises a unique and unforgettable experience for comic book lovers of all ages.

Comic book fans will be able to view works from classic Hong Kong comic books such as “Dao Jian Xiao” (The Three Swordsmen), “Ba Dao” (Tyrant Sword), “Quan Wang” (King Of Fighters); as well as other masterpieces in a variety of different styles.

One of Hong Kong’s most popular veteran comic creators, Jack Fung Chi-ming, will be visiting Malaysia, alongside other popular HK creators like Kwong Sai-kit, as well as Malaysians Black Jellyfish, Olive Yong and others.

All these creators will be exhibiting their works at the event and meet with Malaysian comic book fans. Here are the details:

Hong Kong and Malaysian lineup

The Malaysia-Hong Kong Comics Week will feature 10 Hong Kong and Malaysian comic artists, who will be exhibiting up t reproductions of their original works.

The cartoonists will also be present at the event to meet fans, sign autographs, and hold drawing demonstrations.

The main draw of the event is veteran Hong Kong comics creator Jack Fung Chi-ming, who is best known for iconic comics like “Dao Jian Xiao” and “Ba Dao”; and Kwong Sai-kit, whose “Quan Wang” title is well-known to fans of Hong Kong comic book fans. Kwong is the son of veteran Chinese comic creator, Shangguan Xiaobao.

Other prominent Hong Kong creators include Jeffery Kwong (“The Architect’s Epiphany”, “Indigo”), Wah Kee (“My Soul Mate”), and Jerry Cho (“Naraka Warrior”), who are past winners of the Hong Kong Comics Support Programme (CSP), an initiative aimed at developing the Hong Kong comics industry.

Their works are also well-known to Malaysian comic fans, as they have been translated to Bahasa Malaysia and released in Malaysia to good response.

The Malaysian lineup will also feature some of the country’s most prominent comic creators, including Black Jellyfish, whose works have ranked first in Popular Bookstore’s best-selling charts for three consecutive years.

Among the comic artists best-known works is “Tian Qiao Xia De Tian Tang” (Paradise Under The Flyover), which is due be adapted into a film after the rights were bought by a Hong Kong film company.

Other well-known Malaysian names who will be at the event include popular webcomic creators like Olive Yong (“BICHI MAO”) and Lok (“Relaxed Comic”), graphic illustrator Miin, and well-known cartoonist and YouTuber Mist.

This new generation of Malaysian comic creators use different platforms and methods to promote their creations, garnering a large fanbase on various social media sites, and even collaborate with well-known major brands.

CREATOR BIOS

Malaysia

Olive Yong – Author of the webcomic “BICHI MAO”. Published on Instagram, the comic has garnered over 580,000 fans and readers all over the world, and Yong has also collaborated with well-known brands such as Samsung and Soda.

Black JellyFish: One of Malaysia’s top-selling comic creators, well-known for comics that touch on current affairs and stories. His works have topped Popular Bookstore’s best-selling list for three consecutive years, and his iconic work “Paradise Under the Bridge” has been earmarked for a film adaptation in Hong Kong.

LOK: The author of well-known webcomic “Relaxed Comic”. He has 160,000 fans on Facebook and is a regular collaborator with online games.

Miin: A popular online comic creator with 400,000 fans on Facebook, actively involved in Webtone serialization and fan fiction, and is also an illustrator for well-known mobile games such as “Tower of Gods” and “Demons and Onmyoji”.

Mist: A graphic cartoonist and Youtuber who has attracted thousands of fans with her cute and funny style.

Hong Kong

Jack Fung Chi-ming: A popular veteran comics creator who has released iconic works such as “Ba Dao” (Tyrant Sword) and “Dao Jian Xiao” (The Three Swordsmen), which was adapted into a movie starring Andy Lau in 1994.

Kwong Sai-kit: The son of veteran Chinese comic creator, Shangguan Xiaobao, Kwong assisted his father in managing the publishing of Kwong Comics, and became famous for his personal works such as “Quan Wang” (King Of Fighters), “Dao Sha Shen” (God of Killers), and “Shu Du Gao Shu” (High Speed Capital), and other comic adaptations of popular video games.

Jeffrey Kwong: Winner of the first and second editions of the HK Comics Support Programme, whose signature works include “Indigo” and “The Architect’s Epiphany”, which has been translated into Bahasa Malaysia and released in Malaysia as “Kitab Pemusnah Kota”.

Wah Kee: The first winner of the HK Comics Support Programme, whose delicate and poetic signature work “My Soul Mate” won the initiative’s Best Script award and was released in Malaysia as “Bara Impian”. The comic has also been released in Spain, France and other countries.

Jerry Cho: A longtime Hong Kong comics creator who has participated in the creation of many classic works, such as “Seven Weapons”, “Magic F”, “The Killer” and “Dead Spot”. His latest work, “Naraka Warrior”, was translated to BM and released in Malaysia as “Pahlawan Neraka”.
